Here in
the tropics, the rainy season is also the season for Dengue, a potentially
deadly, yet all too common mosquito borne disease. Last year there were over
200,000 cases of Dengue fever reported in the Philippines, and almost 600 were
fatalities. What is alarming is that this was way up from the 121,000 reported
instances in 2014. More alarming still is that just this year, the DOH has
reported 70,000 Dengue cases from January to July, the supposed lean Dengue
months, this is 19% more than the same period last year. It is now more
imperative than ever that measures be taken to curb Dengue, and the best way to
do that is to control the numbers of Dengue Mosquitoes.

A New, Safe and Effective Way to Deal with Dengue Mosquitoes

imperative than ever that measures be taken to curb Dengue, and the best way to
do that is to control the numbers of Dengue Mosquitoes.
In the Philippines, nobody is safe form Dengue, it cuts across all socio-economic barriers. Anyone can be infected and anyone can die from it. In fact Dengue statistics in the Philippines are based only on people who seek treatment at hospitals or clinics. Because the initial symptoms of Dengue are the same as more benign illnesses such as the flu, many Dengue cases go unreported, especially since instances of the flu also rise at the onset of the rainy season. Dengue is all too often detected too late, which is part of the reason why it is so potentially deadly.
The
problem with products that kill or repel mosquitoes is that there is always a
catch. There are sufficient studies to show that most chemical based products
can be quite harmful if used too long. Spray products do kill mosquitoes,
but there is a reason even their manufacturers advise people not to enter a
freshly sprayed room for some time. Fume based products such as katol (mosquito
coils) and vape mats emit toxins and are singled out by the website babycenter
in as particularly harmful to infants but also to adults.
Electric bug zappers are quite noisy and can be quite disruptive at night; and finally, lotions are effective, but not affordable or convenient enough to apply daily. This is why the Hanns Insect Trap is the best alternative for anyone but especially for mothers who want to keep mosquitoes away from their kids, but who don’t like the adverse effects of other mosquito control methods.

Like a bug zapper, the Hanns Insect Trap uses a UV light to
attract insects, so like the bug zapper, it is fume and toxin free. However, while bug zappers can be quite noisy
and even startling every time a bug is zapped, the Hanns Insect Trap deals with
mosquitoes quietly by sucking them into a cage out of which they can’t escape,
and that they ultimately die in. They are
also extremely simple to deploy, you just plug them in and turn them on. With prolonged use, Hanns Insect Traps can
get even mosquito-infested areas under control.

REVIEW: DERMAX UV Baby Water-Burst Sunscreen
Another product I got from SkinStation Grand Opening at Venice Grand Cannal Mall is the UV Baby Water-Burst Sunscreen.
What's "water bust" all about? The UV sunscreen starts off with the usual smooth creamy texture. A slow massage om your skin releases water droplets from the cream, and you get this refreshing cooling sensation.
PRODUCT CLAIMS:
Broad-spectrum sun protection safe and gentle enough for kids and babies 6 months and older.
Creates a cooling burst of moisture when applied on the skin with its breakthrough
water-burst technology.
SRP: Php 720 (50 ml)
At first, it was hard to pump the bottle because of the creamy texture.
After applying, water droplets released leaving the skin soft and non-greasy.
I'm the person who is not really a fan of sunscreens. I hate the greasy and heavy feeling of it. But I must admit that it is a must whether we like it or not especially living in a tropical country.
Since I'm a work-from-home mom, I don't usually stay under the sun. So, when I received this product, I thought of trying it on my eldest son who plays soccer every Saturday under the heat of the sun.
My eldest son Gabi have very sensitive skin. We only use gentle soap on his skin since he has eczema. He also had a series of skin irritations when exposed to harsh chemicals. Even for his shampoo, we only use gentle products. Since this sunscreen is safe for babies 6 months and older, I decided to try it on him and see if this will be a fit for his skin.
I used it once under my usual BB Cream and it made my face look very oily. My fault was I didn't finish it with a pressed powder. Hihihi. Nevertheless, I love the lightweight and non-greasy feel. It's just like putting on your favorite moisturizer.
Now every time we go out under the sun, we make sure that we have DERMAX UV Baby with us.

We've been using this for a few weeks now, so far it doesn't cause any irritation on my son's sensitive skin. It keeps him protected under the sun while leaving his skin hydrated.

Our Lapbooking Experience
I wasn't really into lapbooking until I saw a pile of colorful lapbooks in Sis Ayenn's house the last time we gathered for our coop. Sis Ayenn of Ayen's Dwelling Place is our mentor when it comes to homeschooling. She is a great inspiration and her family is a blessing to us. I flipped through some of the lapbooks made by her two kids and I love how creative and personal it is. Then, I decided to do the same.
Here's how we do lapbooking:
I usually print free lapbook templates from online resources. I will cut, fold and set it aside for future use. Sometimes, I ask for Gabi's help to cut them for me.
During study time, I will ask him to read a lesson and will hand over a few templates to use. I will ask him to write down any important facts or information he learned from what he just read. It's like a notebooking of a sort - something I got from Sis Ayenn also.

I like how Gabi will write information according to how he understands it and would go beyond merely copying what is in the book. After that, he will put designs and drawings on the lapbook which really excites him. I recently allowed him to do it so he will not find the task boring.
Sometimes, I will print ready-made lapbooks for the topic that we are covering. There are a lot online, for FREE.
Here are our Grade 3 Lapbooks:
We used this Multiplication Lapbook when we were discussing multiplication. Gabi wrote the answers at the back of the mini-books and flaps.
I wrote about Gabi's Horrible Histories Obsession which led us into making a Tudor Lapbook.

When Gabi's Lolo Jojo died, he kept bugging us with questions Stroke. We decided to do a little research and discussed it to him. Then, we came up with this output. You can read about how his Lolo Jojo saved Gabi's life here.
We went to Tagaytay last June to attend a wedding and integrated it to our homeschooling. The lapbook includes brief information About Tagaytay, it's distance from our house (in km and m) and the places we visited. Gabi shared his experience and explained what he knew about the wedding. He also shared that he started to like the song "Ikaw" by Yeng Constantino after hearing it at the wedding. This is our Q3 Civics, Filipino, Math, Bible, Arts and Music output in one.
What I like about lapbooking is it serves as an easy reference for us on topics we discussed. It also helps Gabi to be more creative. We love to flip the mini-books from time to time and look back on the memories we built along with it. I asked Gabi if he still wants to do it this coming school year and he said yes! I may not know until when we will be doing this, but for now, this will be a part of our homeschool journey.

Nutri10 Plus Syrup para sa Batang Aktibo at Malakas
As Moms, we want our kids to become healthy and strong. As much as possible, we don't like them getting sick. So we tried to provide the foods that contain essential nutrients that their growing body needs. We all know that the first line of defense should be a healthy diet.
However, I must admit that sometimes I fall short on this. Crunch times and busy schedules make it hard for us to get healthy meals. Good thing vitamin and mineral supplements can help fill in small nutrient gaps.
I am a believer in supplements ever since I gave birth to my eldest son. Now that I have two active boys, I want to make sure that they get enough essential nutrients.

I am so blessed to be chosen to try Nutri10 Plus Syrup, a product of Wert Philippines, Inc. This is so perfect because my kids' vitamins just ran out. God's provision is always on time!
I'm happy to know that Nutri10 Plus Syrup is packed with essential nutrients. It contains the following:
Taurine – for brain development
Lysine - appetite enhancer
CGF or Chlorella Growth Factor - for physical growth and development
Zinc - for immunity
It also has Vitamins A, B-Complex, C at D3.
My kids are now taking this for more than a week and so far they are loving it. I don't have a hard time giving this to them, thanks to the Ponkan flavor! One visible improvement I've noticed in my toddler is his increase in appetite. He can now finish one cup of rice and he is starting to like eating veggies. Yey!
I'm so blessed to have Nutri10 Plus Syrup as part of my kids' diet. It gives me a little extra insurance that they are getting what they need. Although I believe that it cannot replace all of the benefits of a well-balanced diet, at least it compensates for any shortfalls. Thanks to Mommy Bloggers Philippines and Wert Philippines.
