All About Prereading

We started our Term 2 two weeks ago. A great way to prepare before starting is thru prereading.

Prereading is not a must in a CM Education but it is a helpful tool in teaching our children. It is part of being prepared for the lesson. Having prepared in this way is really empowering to us Mommas!

Prereading

I don't always preread, but I'm actually driving myself to it. I like to be more self-disciplined in my time management and get to it all, but I'm still working on that habit. Prereading is so important yet so time-consuming, to be honest. :)

Let me share what I've learned about prereading and how I do it in our homeschooling.

Let me share what I've learned about prereading and how I do it in our homeschooling.

HOW TO PREREAD

Basically, I just read ahead of my student. I read a week's worth of reading schedule. Ideally, I would love to have it on Fridays since that is the last day of our homeschooling. But if I'm not able to do a week's reading, I read at least a day ahead of him.

I usually have a notebook with me where I write notes. I document key facts, names, places for mapping, vocabulary words and timeline entries. I also record quotes that speak to me and later use it for either dictation or copywork. It's also a time for me to divide the reading if it's too and to make discussion questions. During narration, I just pull out my notes and refer to it.

Some books are read alone by my son, so I need not preread those. I read aloud difficult books and I started my son to read aloud a book to me, these greatly help ease the load.

WHY PREREAD?

Prereading can help to engage with narrations. I noticed if I don't preread, we do not have a valuable conversation.

Part of a CM education is the idea of The Grand Conversation or to have e meaningful conversation. Prereading helps you to be prepared for the lesson and have questions ready. Of course, you do not want to lose the opportunity to share those grand conversations with your child. I also get to enjoy and benefit from those books as well.

We are not doing prereading to see if a certain book is for us because the work of book selections has been done for us by the AmblesideOnline board. Aren't we blessed?

Prereading

WHAT IF I'M NOT ABLE TO PREREAD?

At times I am not able to do it, I need to read aloud the book to my son. We discuss, address any "concerns" and discover things together as we read.

Don't worry, I myself continue to have a difficult time staying ahead of my student but that's ok. I learned from other CM/AO Moms to trust the curriculum, so be gracious to yourself if you are a struggling Momma.

So there, I hope you learned from this post. If you have other ideas, feel free to share by leaving a comment below.

“Five Years Old”

Please, everybody, look at me!
Today I’m five years old, you see!
And after this, I won’t be four,
Not ever, ever, any more!
I won’t be three–or two–or one,
For that was when I’d first begun.
Now I’ll be five awhile, and then
I’ll soon be something else again!

An Appreciation Post to my Adam (because I am Eve) on his 30th Birthday

Dear Dad,

As you celebrate your 30th Birthday, I just want to honor and appreciate you today. You know I am not good at appreciation, but this post is for you.

First, I want to thank God for your life, for giving me the partner I don't deserve yet exactly what I needed. Thanks for making me feel special and loved. Life is easier with you by my side and I couldn't imagine it without you. He gave me an accountability partner to check on me, to rebuke and to help me improve. You support me in my every endeavor and I'm so grateful with that. Your strengths are my weaknesses and it's funny how it compliments and fitted together. Isn't God amazing?

I'm blessed to see how you stand up and assume responsibility as our leader. You make sure to address issues with our kids, to sit down and to talk to them. You resolved to be intentional in ministering to us and you committed to improve as a husband and as a father.

I've witnessed how much your faith has grown over the years. Knowing who you were once before accepting Jesus. Truly, the arm of the Lord is not too short to save. You are now a completely different person, the old has gone, the new has come. Yes, you are not perfect (nobody is) but it is in our imperfections that we magnify the only perfect, which is Jesus. As you mature, you desire to be pleasing to God in everything that you do, to be faithful in small things. I've seen how you would want to serve and give your time and talents generously to God and to others. You always want to have your best foot forward and strive for excellence and your hard work is incomparable.

Last 2018 was a bit tough. Our marriage was into a different storm. Yet the Lord remained faithful to us. I've seen you rise up every time you fall, how you strive to humble yourself, admit your faults and start anew. You accepted defeats yet you did not give up.

Sometimes, the experiences we are most ashamed of are the very things God wants to use as our ministry to others. He takes our failures and produces something good. Indeed, He never wastes a hurt.

I know the Lord is not done with you yet. He is still in the business of working in you and through you, there is still a lot to improve but I am grateful to God for bringing you this far. Character-building can be long and painful. He will develop your character to match bigger tests, and with greater tests will come greater love for God and knowledge of His ways. It is my joy to be with you as I watch you bloom.

To my partner, lover and (as John was to Abigail Adams) my dearest friend, Happy and Blessed Birthday!

Happy New Year dear readers! Thank you for being part of my 2018 and hopefully in the years to come!

2018 Highlights

As what my custom for the past two years, I'm listing down my 2018 highlights. Before I wrote this,  I backread my previous years' highlights and it just blesses me to see different milestones of our family for the past years. It brought memories of the past that is dear to me. This is a good way to be reminded of these things since these only displays God's faithfulness in our family.

This is a good way to be reminded of these things since these only displays God's faithfulness in our family.

Let's get started:

1. The gift of a better vision.

Last 2018, my eldest son, Gabi was diagnosed as nearsighted with astigmatism. He was advised to wear glasses too just like his younger brother. This may not seem like a piece of good news, nonetheless, we rejoiced in the fact that there are access and a way to have a better vision. There is hope and we owe that to God and on what technology has to offer to improve lives.

More about this story here.

2018 Highlights

Another one was the success of Gael's IOL surgery. We've seen how the Lord moved and orchestrated everything before and after the operation. He uses different people to make it happen. When we allowed God to do the work, we stand in awe because everything fell into its rightful places. What an amazing God!

More of that here.

His operation has been part of our prayer list and as we do our Prayer and Fasting this week, I'm grateful that it will now be different. God is really a God who answers prayers if it's according to His will (1 John 5:14). Gael's vision is completely different now and we witnessed how it helps him in many ways. He is more confident outdoor and with people. Every time we observe him, we couldn't help but Praise the Lord.

At this moment, he is in continuous eye drops and eye patch to address his lazy eye.

2. Working at home

This year, hubby was granted to work at home for three days in a week. It was a favor from God and men which he doesn't deserve. It was a great relief in his travel time which also entails more time with us and with his woodworking hobby.

3. Bigger Small Group

From three couples, we are now discipling nine. The new addition was a product of a merging happened between our uplines and downlines. Our small group leader needs to take care of family matters that led them to let go of our small group. The Lord gave us a bigger assignment when we took over.

It was a big challenge for us and seemingly an impossible task since we were the youngest couple in our upline and we felt incapable to handle it. During one of my quiet time, the Lord comforted me thru the story of Solomon.

“7 Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. 8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. 9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” ~ 1 Kings 3:7-9 NIV

When God gives an assignment, it is no longer an impossibility but rather it is an absolute certainty. He is the one who will empower us to do the work, all He requires us is our obedience. I've learned that we just have to be obedient in making the effort to teach them, even though we still have plenty to learn ourselves.

4. Ministry Involvement

2018 opened more doors for us to serve using our God-given skills and talents. Last March, I joined Saints Dance Ministry which was my come back to dancing after 10 years. It all started when a friend asked me to join an Open Dance Class in our church.

In this ministry, I've seen different talented people and I am so blessed being surrounded by young and very enthusiastic people. I saw them balance school, work, and family while being active in the ministry.  I witnessed how they persevere even if they are sick, lack sleep, or even with injuries. These things can be a valid excuse but nothing can stop them to give their very best to God. Even if they are fighting their own battles and crying inside, yet they dance full of joy.

I had my first dance worship and my first Praise Dance Concert with them and I am so privileged!

We also served in the Glorious Hope Program on weekends for more or less seven months. We had the privilege to share our testimony of hope and restoration before the run in CCF Bay Area on their Second Year Anniversary.

2018 Highlights

We served at CCF Bay Area for the entire run on Saturday afternoons. Hubby in the Praise and Worship Team and Logistics while I served as a Life Coach. On Sundays, we both served as Life Coaches in our upline small group.

Serving in GH allowed us to see things from a different perspective. We've heard painful stories and experiences from our participants and witnessed them understand where their personal issues are coming from, learned how to process their emotions and found new hope in Christ. I have so many takeaways from them as a wife and as a parent.

5. Marriage

Our marriage was again put to a test this year. We had a major storm (I hope to put that in detail, Lord willing and with my husband's permission) but by God's grace, we were able to surpass it and learned valuable lessons. Although we know that the battle doesn't end, the Lord is with us and He will never leave us nor forsake us.

2018 Highlights

All of these happenings and life moments we had were unexpected. This new year, there will be more surprising events, but it will surely bring out the glory of God. Because He is sovereign, I can rest that He is in control.

Though we are in changing times,  we have an unchanging God who remains faithful and loving.

Looking forward to what God will direct us to this 2019!
